Why is a card so compelling to me?

Because it is so multi-dimensional! It is a tangible object whose seemingly simple purpose to say something meaningful to another person is cheap and disposable. Though, in an artful tradition of both comical and sincere words and pictures, many people hold on to these gestures of love for a lifetime. This idea of making a small treasure is motivating. For me, the act of opening is full of metaphors. As we open a card, we open our heart. We open to a surprise of the unknown. There will always be an outside cover but it is what is in the inside that truly matters. Outside there is anticipation. Inside there is time. There is a quiet space. There is a visual and emotional embrace. We connect in a gift-giving collaboration. What a beautiful symbol for life – stay open, be kind, love deeply.
